Why an environmental site assessment?

To determine whether land is potentially contaminated, through an environmental site assessment, you can obtain information on current and past land uses and identify any activities that may potentially be contaminating.

We offer a waste soil classification service for potentially contaminated soil and groundwater assessments for a range of needs. If you’re a prospective property purchaser, construction company, developer or petrol distributor, we can assess whether your soil and groundwater is contaminated and how to manage it. We provide help for general manufacturing facilities, childcare facilities, municipal councils and government departments. Not only that, but we are straightforward, affordable and efficient in what we do.

Types of Environmental Site Assessments (ESA)

There are 2 stages to environmental site assessments. We start with a preliminary assessment to determine what contaminants may be likely on your site, before moving to a more detailed assessment to assess the presence of any potential contaminants. For each phase, we deliver a report to help you understand the next steps.

Phase 1 Preliminary Site Investigations (PSI)

In a Preliminary Site Investigation or PSI, we look at the likelihood of any potential contaminants and their locations. To do this, our Ultra Environmental Consultants will review:

  • the site history and past records
  • previous and current site activities
  • the environmental setting
  • whether any underground storage tanks, chemical stores or surface staining is present
  • site drainage and adjacent land uses
  • limited soil sampling

Phase 2 Detailed Site Investigations (DSI)

With a Detailed Site Investigation or DSI, we’ll perform the following activities:

  • an initial work plan using the Phase 1 PSI information
  • a soil assessment (a collection of soil samples with asbestos and chemical analysis)
  • potentially a groundwater assessment including groundwater bore installation
  • an appraisal of the risks that contaminants may present to human and environmental health
  • further assessment works to accurately delineate the extent of contamination
  • remediation works where risks to receptors are deemed unacceptable
  • validation soil and groundwater works to ensure remediation works were performed to a satisfactory standard

When land or groundwater is contaminated, Ultra Environmental can guide you on your duty to manage contaminated land and duty to notify of contaminated land if applicable.
